2016-2017 New Academic Year, New Challenge
As the children and teachers return to schools for the new academic year it’s time to brush off the cobwebs and refresh those learning centres of our brains to get ready to study again. Like any new year, it brings with it changes in faces and locations with new students and new schools, but also changes in approaches as we see institutes continuing to strive for educational excellence. Classrooms and great equipment might be one aspect of what helps make a school excellent, but we all know it’s mainly about the teacher and the standard of teaching that makes the real difference.
In fact, no matter how old you are I would bet you can remember a teacher from your primary school – either for good reasons i.e. he/she was a positive impact in your life, or for all the wrong reasons! But there is no arguing that teachers play a significant role in the development of young minds. Teachers have to stay up to date with changes in education and learning, as well as adapting an eclectic mix of approaches and methodologies to the individual learners in front of them. Teachers focus on how best to differentiate tasks and materials in order to engage, excite, and inspire young generations. So it goes without saying that the best teachers, are lifelong learners too!
Polyskills IH Dubai has seen one such cohort of excellent teachers gain their CELTA teaching qualification this summer. These teachers will take back to their institutes (from primary education schools to universities), an understanding of learner-centred instruction and a more communicative approach to language teaching than is traditionally experienced in the region. They even went so far as to say it was the “best teacher training course” in the country! (The CELTA is the internationally-recognised Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages from the University of Cambridge English Language Assessment.) These teachers have demonstrated a strong commitment to their own professional development by foregoing 4 weeks of their summer holidays to work on the CELTA instead – inspirational attitude!
With so much positivity and opportunity in the UAE, it feels like a great time to set ourselves the challenge of continuing to develop both professionally and personally, to make this academic year one that you, and your learners, remember for all the right reasons in years to come. Up-skill your teaching with a range of accredited and non-accredited training and development courses at Polyskills – IH Dubai. There are a number of courses available online too, meaning that you have the flexibility to learn when you are free.
